Surprisingly, one of the most well loved sports in the world is also relatively young. Despite the game's youth, it has gone through a wide variety of changes and evolution as a part of its rich history.

Believe it or not, but at one time there wasn't Asics or Nike women's volleyball shoes or even volleyball uniforms for sale anywhere, let alone online!

To fully understand and appreciate how much the game has changed and how much work was put into to make it successful, you need to search back to the very origin of Volleyball, and study when and why changes were made.

Just over 100 years ago, in 1895, William G. Morgan developed the first game of Volleyball. At the time, Morgan dubbed the game "Mintonette". "Mintonette" was created for business men as a game that involved less physical contact at the chapter of the YMCA where he worked at in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan borrowed aspects from several games to create his own game. The first aspect was from tennis, borrowing the net. Instead of the standard net, however, he raised it to be 6 foot 6 inches high, so it was just over the heads of average men. Other sports he borrowed from include basketball, baseball and handball. During one of the demonstration games of the sport, one of the spectators commented the game was more about volleying, and the games name was changed to Volleyball.

That was only the beginning.

In 1896, the first official game of Volleyball was played at Springfield College. This game signified the first real take-off of the sport, and led into further games being played at a variety of different Colleges. In the year 1900, Volleyball had taken off enough where a special ball was designed just for the game. Another feat also accomplished in 1900 was that the YMCA took the sport from America to Canada, the Orient and the southern hemisphere. Five years later, Volleyball also spread to Cuba. This spreading was what signified the start of the Volleyball era. Unlike most sports, Volleyball moved International in its early days, allowing for the game to evolve to meet the players needs world wide.

In 1907, Volleyball received its first recognition of being one of the most popular sports at the Playground of America convention. This was the first recognition the sport received, and helped to further its popularity. In the following ten years, the YMCA continued to spread the sport to Brazil, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. In 1913, the first official Volleyball competition was held in the Far Eastern Games.

1916 saw Volleyball have its first true evolution. In the Philippines, the set and spike offensive pass was introduced, and game play was altered to involve this new form. The Filipinos developed the "bomba", which is the kill, and the named the hitter the "bomberino". In this same year, the NCAA was invited by the YMCA to alter the rules of the game, and it was initiated into Colleges and other schools as a part of the standard physical education courses and intramural programs. A year later, the scoring system was also adjusted so that a game ended after 15 points instead of 21. This allowed more games to be played within the same span of time, in an attempt to make the sessions a little shorter for the players.

Three short years later, in 1919, the American Expeditionary Forces donated 16,000 Volleyballs to the troops, which provided a stimulus for growth in foreign countries. With this rise in growth of the sport, new rules began being developed. A year later, the three hits per side rule and the back row attack rules were put into place.

By 1928, players and fans of the sport realized that "official" tournament rules and regulations were required. The United States Volleyball Association was formed, and the first U.S. Open Volleyball tournament was held. The U.S. Open allowed for squads that were not YMCA sanctioned to participate, which was a breakthrough at the time. This evolution permitted lovers of the sport to fully enjoy the game without having to be tied to the organization that created it.

After 1928, the game of Volleyball was forever changed. With the "official" rules set down, and a tournament that wasn't private to the YMCA, the popularity of the sport was allowed to sky rocket. The Men's U.S. Open was held every year thereafter, with the exception of three years. 1943, 1944 and 1989 did not have the yearly tournaments, due to wars and other obstacles.

In 1934, Volleyball saw another extensive change through the recognition of official referees to oversee the games. This change in particular drastically altered the calls and the fairness of the game.

The 1940's held several special events for Volleyball. Not only was the forearm pass introduced into the game, the first world championship Volleyball game was held. It was during this time that the volleyball movement saw fruition, and squads from all over the world could find out who was the best. This became a yearly event, allowing for more publicity of the sport, which aided in its growth. Around this time, over 50 million people were playing world wide, in over 60 different countries.

By 1964, Volleyball had spread enough to warrant introduction into the Olympic games. The first games took place in Tokyo, where a rubber carcass with leather panels was used for the ball. This ball became the one that would be used in most modern competitions. As a part of the Olympic games, Volleyball was allowed to grow even further, until it secured a place for itself as the second most played game in the world.

Despite this high level of popularity, it wasn't until 1986 that the Women's Professional Volleyball Association, or the WPVA, was formed. With the growing rate of professional interest by both sexes, Volleyball was finally allowed to reach its full potential for popularity. Elementary, middle and high schools, as well as colleges all invested into the game by providing courses in Volleyball in their physical education, so that the sport was known in most households around the world.

While still trailing behind Soccer for popularity, Volleyball has done extremely well for a game with roots so young.

    I'm not really a huge fan of long distance running.

    However that's possibly because I'm not really great at it. I'm currently training for the Gate River Run, a 15K event which my family and I attend annually. This is often the only occasion I actually relish running. Because it's the actual 15K nation's championship run, it's really an exciting competition and attracts an awesome crowd. As I mentioned, long distance running has not been one of my strong points, nevertheless I'm going to attempt to improve that this year. At the moment, during my long-distance runs my pace is a bit more than ten minutes a mile. I feel like someone who is as physically active and in shape as I am should certainly sustain an 8 minute per mile pace or better. So even though I've been running for quite some time, I began looking for the very best long distance running tips for beginners.

    Enter ChiRunning.

    ChiRunning is a program developed by Danny Dreyer, one of the world's top-notch Ultra Marathon runners. It's termed an "effortless" as well as "injury-free" approach to running. My dad has been practicing ChiRunning for some time now and just recently successfully completed his very first half-marathon (easily with no recovery time needed). I figure I must give this thing an attempt because although it's not my primary choice for a cardiovascular workout (high intensity interval training takes that honor), long distance running gives me an undeniable sense of pride and achievement that I simply don't feel after carrying out wind sprints in the park.

    I've only recently begun exploring this program, but from what I've collected to date, it's all about form.

    Maintain an aligned posture.

    Ensure that when you are standing up, your entire body creates a "column" with your shoulder, hip, and ankle forming a straight vertical line. Maintaining this kind of form when you are running helps prevent your quads and lower back muscles from needing to do unnecessary work. Your chest needs to be open to facilitate breathing. You should also align your lower body. This can be achieved by making sure your toes are always pointed directly forward rather than out to the sides. Maintaining lower body alignment will help keep the knees from being strained while you are running. Finally, engage your core by aligning your pelvis forward using your lower abs. The core is vital to keeping your posture in-line throughout your run.

    Use gravity to your advantage by leaning.

    Among the key points behind ChiRunning is to utilize gravity to work with you while you run so the muscles are doing as little work as possible. This is achieved by leaning forward with your column intact. Your feet should naturally lift off the ground to catch your fall throughout each stride rather than getting jerked upwards with the "push off" motion which is typical for non-Chi runners. Again, the concept is to utilize less energy. Your entire lower body should remain relaxed keeping unnecessary stress away from the balls of your feet. The lean is considered the "gas pedal" of ChiRunning. If you want to run faster, lean more. This helps ensure your lower limbs don't actually do more work to raise your speed.

    Perfect the "midfoot strike".

    When running, your heel should lift up over your other ankle. In comparison, in typical running, there will be continuous strain on the balls of your feet because instead of this "midfoot strike" that occurs when you are raising the feet, your heel strikes the surface first and then the ball of the foot pushes up to push you forward. This uses all kinds of excessive energy. With the back heel lift approach, your lower body needs to be free of strain. When you're running and advancing with the appropriate back heel lift, the feet should move in a circular motion like pedaling on a bike, not swinging back and forth like a pendulum. When you practice this, pretend you are trying to be stealth and sneak up on somebody. Think graceful like a gazelle instead of say, a T-Rex.

    Make use of your arms effectively.

    When you're running, your arms should be bent with your elbows forming a 90 degree angle, but don't pump the arms. Instead, swing your elbows back to your rear. Relax your hands and wrists as well. Avoid shrugging your shoulders and don't cross the middle of your body with your hands while swinging your arms backwards.

    So those are the basics.

    It's a great deal to ingest when you consider something as basic as running. Nonetheless, as the book describes, when you're mastering a sport like golf or tennis, correct technique and form make a huge difference with regards to effectiveness. Novice golfers and tennis players usually get instruction and even the world's top professionals have coaches that constantly help them with the mechanics. Yet in regards to running, the majority of us just go out and do it without even thinking about our technique and form.     Whether you are just starting to run or if looking for your next pair of running shoes you might be wondering if there is a difference between men's and women's running shoes. If you plan to just wear them around the house or just as a comfortable shoe there are basically no differences. But, if you are going to use them for running and training like you would when you are training to run a half marathon then there are major differences and you should get a shoe made specifically for women.

    There are three main differences between men's and women's running shoes. Women's running shoes need motion control, more flexibility and don't need as much cushioning. This is based on physiological factors and is not a marketing ploy.

    One of the main reasons that women need a different type of shoe is that they tend to have wider hips than men. Since women's hips are wider their legs slant inward from their hips to their ankles causing more of an angle on their feet as they run. The angle causes inward pronation on every step. Because of this pronation many women need motion control shoes to compensate for the problem. As a rule men's hip are normally not as wide and they usually don't have this issue and although it can be an issue for men and they should check for pronation before buying a pair of shoes just as the women should, most shoe manufacturers are aware of the situation with women and take it into consideration when designing running shoes for women.

    Another factor that makes women's running shoes different than men's is the fact that body mass on males is more than on females. Because of the difference in body mass the same size shoe would need less cushioning for a women than for a man. Although there are great advances in materials for cushioning and support, more cushioning means more weight and more stiffness. By needing less cushioning women's shoes are lighter and less stiff - which is nice. With this in mind manufacturers make women's shoes with less cushioning and a lot more flexible. That is one of the reasons that when you compare men's running shoes to women's they seem a lot lighter and seem to have less cushioning.

    So when you look for your next set of women's running shoes, you still have a lot of choices on brands and styles and you have a lot of research to do, but hopefully you'll at least understand why you need to look for shoes specifically for women.

    Athletic shoes used to be a specialty niche - one which did not provide much in the way of options until very recently.     For the Casual Cyclist

Not only can a loose sole result in slippage and injury; a good, stiff sole will allow you to transfer more energy from your motion to the pedals and thus you will perform better.

    The choices for avid cyclists are many and will often depend on your style of bike, personal preferences, and past experience. The first and most common type of cycling shoe has a clip attached to the toe to keep your foot firmly planted on the pedal at all times. This will ensure that you do not lose your grip and cause an accident. These shoes provide optimum energy transfer and are best for road cyclists.

    For a mountain biker, this type of shoe would be incredibly dangerous. Therefore, different shoes are required for offroad cycling. It is vital to be able to get on and off of a bike almost instantly when riding in rough terrain or on big hills, especially with the heightened risk of falling that accompanies these routes. In addition, mountain biking shoes need to be able to double as a sturdy hiking shoe or boot because you may be forced to hike a ways or carry your bicycle over especially harsh terrain while on a ride.

    The closures on professional cycling shoes will vary as well, offering different choices for different riding styles. Laces are always a popular choice, while Velcro is the usual selection for professionals whose feet are planted to the pedal. You want to choose a shoe that will be comfortable and allow you to feel safe while pedaling. If Velcro provides that feeling of safety, consider buying a Velcro shoe.

    When exercising, you must consider and purchase the right kind of equipment, especially as you begin to cycle more often and more intensely. Without the right shoes, you risk not only injuring your leg or foot, but causing unnecessary pain in your lower body and losing a good percentage of the energy being transferred from your legs to the pedals. For efficiency, safety, and general enjoyment, consider a pair of dedicated cycling shoes.
